Operation Horus Rising

Operation Horus Rising

Location: Gulf of Bothnia – Virolahti, Finland

Written by LCPL. Nova

Strategic Situation

With the collapse of the Ukraine and Chenaraus to Russian Forces moving West and the fall of Romania to Serbia moving East, it appears that once more Russia is building an Empire in Europe. A large amount of US and NATO forces are trapped in the Black Sea, western Europe is preparing itself for a land war. A call for aid has come from Finland, a US airbase fell to a joint attack from rebel forces and highly trained special forces soldiers that CTRG discovered were of Serbian origin.

The province of Virolahti is of strategic value as it contains an airfield and large fuel stockpiles as well as ports that allow large quantities of supplies to be deposited. Virolahti is also very close to the Russian border and several large supply routes travel through or close to Virolahti. The US is spread thin throughout the Gulf of Bothnia, reinforcing it in preparation for a Russian assault, to aid their US allies a variety of commonwealth nations have promised support in the theatre. To add to this logistical nightmare, many high level government and military personnel have been assassinated and espionage campaigns are being conducted to dull the Commonwealth.

The 101st Airborne landed in TAOR SEDIRAE expecting to make gains deep into Finland but were quickly cut off by Russian Mechanised forces. Currently NATO task forces are cut off in different regions throughout Scandinavia, if these forces do not link up then Scandinavia will fall and Russia will be able to focus on the rest of the European Theatre. Russia has taken the province of Virolahti and pushed into Norway effectively cutting off NATO forces in Finland, although limited amounts of resupply can be flown in from Germany. Without retaking AO LUPERCAL there is no way to maintain a strong front against the Russian advance and the loss of Scandinavia will be imminent. The North Western Airfield in TAOR ABADDON is of particular importance as it is large enough to land significant amounts of supplies, as such it is the primary objective of this AO.

AO LUPERCAL currently houses the Finnish Minister of Defence who has been calling for a vote in favour of capitulating to the Russians. If Antti Kaikkonen, the Minister of Defence is found or evidence of his whereabouts is located this will be considered top priority.

The US have noted the extreme levels of proficiency shown by SAS Squadron F and have firmly requested that they provide the speartip to much of the Scandinavian Campaign.

Operational Situation

CTRG-0 has been assigned to AO LUPERCAL in the province of Virolahti, CTRG-0 will continue to pose as the newly formed British Army SAS squadron F and has been attached to US command to assist with special operations and any other role they may need. While this is a departure from the standard deployment of CTRG operatives it is important to maintain appearances and do whatever it takes to win the war and further the goals of CTRG Central.

A large number of Finnish forces have sided with Russia and are providing support in the South West, their strength is thought to be between 2 and 3 companies. Russia is in Virolahti in Division Strength with attached armour and air assets, the soldiers here are all highly trained and veterans of years of warfare throughout European and Middle Eastern warzones.

The fear amongst Commonwealth commanders is now almost fully realised, that should the gulf of Bothnia fall, the Norwegian sea could follow shortly after, Russian Forces could then encircle any European forces in mainland Europe from the north.

CTRG-0 has been called into the area to assist the US in recapturing Virolahti which will stymie Russian forces moving into the Baltic Sea and blockading the Gulf of Bothnia. Additionally to this, Serbians still seem to be active so far north though members of their government have expressed displeasure at their involvement in what they have called a ‘Russian war’. Any evidence of why they are active in the area would be considered priority intel to CTRG command.

NATO forces are having trouble pushing into Virolahti and as such there is no safe path to friendly held territory. CTRG 0 will need to push south and find a way to rejoin the NATO forces doing any damage they can to the enemy forces on the way through.

Mission

CTRG 0 is to DESTROY enemy assets in TAOR QRUZE and create a critical vulnerability IOT allow 10th Mountain access to AO LUPERCAL. CTRG 0 is to RV with the US 101st Airborne and 1st Marine Reconnaissance Battalion and to assist them with the CLEAR of TAOR TORGADDON.

Habits – Reinforcements arrive approximately at midday every day via truck.

Intention – The Russian military wishes to expel US airborne from SEDIRAE and appear to be massing for an attack, albeit slowly.

Morale – High.

Situation

After breaking through Russian lines for the second time in as many weeks, CTRG 0 has made its way to the USS Nimitz carrier group for medical and resupply. Reports of Russian strength are accurate, they have amassed in division strength throughout Eastern Finland. MSV units are holding the MSR’s that connect St Petersburg to Helsinki supported by Russian Armoured units. The densely forested terrain of TAOR TARGOST is proving difficult to take with US Airborne troops being expelled from TARGOST and pushed back to TAOR SEDIRAE by a Russian Mechanised Rifle company. The Russian vehicles patrol the motor ways or guard towns by open fields as they are not as useful in the thick forests of the TAOR.

CTRG 0 has been tasked with assaulting Kirkonkyla at the heart of TAOR TARGOST with the intention of allowing the US Airborne to the west to attempt to link up with the commonwealth forces. Together they will be able to clear and hold TAOR TARGOST. US munitions are running low and as such the aviation assets on the Nimitz are unable to resupply. The USS Winston Churchill with newly upgraded 21 cell VLS loaded with Tomahawk cruise missiles and 5” gun will provide fire support while the HMAS Sydney will provide air defence over TAOR TARGOST with its RIM-116 and Mk 41 VLS. The HMS Essex newly bought from the US houses all of the assets for CTRG 0 for this campaign with a modest, but limited, amount of fuel, munitions and weapons.

Mission

CTRG 0 is to assist US 101st Airborne to CLEAR TAOR TARGOST IOT set conditions for further INFLUENCE operations within TAOR AXIMAND.

Execution

Phase 1 – Recon TAOR TARGOST

Phase 2 – CLEAR TAOR TARGOST

Phase 3 – Hold Kirkonkyla until US Airborne can arrive with reinforcements.

Phase 4 – ENDEX at USS Nimitz carrier group in TAOR LOKEN

Phase 3 – TAOR MALOGHURST

Situation

CTRG 0, under the guise of the SAS Sabre F, has managed to capture the enemy held TAOR TARGOST. 63 allied lives were lost for a total of 147 confirmed enemies killed, the Russian forces have pulled back to TAOR AXIMAND and KIBRE defending them heavily and taking control of the civilian zones in search for the Minister of Defence. Currently NATO forces face a 3 fold problem. The Russian tanks to the north are too numerous for infantry to defeat solely, the Russian anti-air net has proven extremely capable at denying air assets access to the mainland and lastly the 10th Mountain Division is facing stiff resistance in the North. The change of leadership after the tragic death of their former commander has severely hindered the US movements south, while they are defeating Russian armour at a steady pace, almost all vehicles are damaged and the fear of facing a line of Finnish Leopards is causing grave concerns amongst NATO commanders.

The Finnish Forces that have sided with the Russians are more numerous than expected and have also managed to gather rebels to defend the waters and islands of TAOR EKKADON. To maintain the security of the USMC flanks as they push northward the task has fallen to CTRG 0 to clear the islands of enemy forces before moving westward and on to the airfield and capturing it. The USMC, 101st Airborne and 10th Mountain have all given reports of artillery fire from the TAOR MALOGHURST region, the commanders of these units have asked CTRG 0 to deal with these if we are able.

Situation - Terrain

Observation – Dense forest and sparse towns with some farmland.

Cover – expect heavily forested areas to provide only concealment

Obstacle – Natural impediments of Forest. The only available approach is by boat past enemy held islands in TAOR EKKADON.

Key Terrain – Klamilanlahti contains an inlet which can be used to move very close to the enemy held town of Klamila

Avenue of approach – Broad number of approaches for waterborne craft.

Situation - Enemy (Finnish Army)

Size – Finnish Rifle Company spread IVO MALOGHURST airfield, a further platoon sized force expected to be holding to the town of Klamila. Unknown number of enemies on islands to the East of TAOR MALOGHURST

Activities – Finnish armed forces holding the airfield, sighting of Finnish Jaegers patrolling the surrounding forest. All ground vehicles appear to have pulled out northwards towards Klamila or even further in preparation for the 10th Mountain attack.

Locations – Finnish rebels seen across the islands of TAOR EKKADON. Finnish army around the airfield and Klamila.

Units – Finnish rifle companies, Finnish Jaegers and Finnish rebels.

Tactics – Expected to hold position and then assault the US positions under the cover of indirect bombardment.

Equipment – 7.62 RK 62 in use by Finnish army. Scar-L and Scar-H in use by Jaegars. Leopard MBT, ITPSV Leopard 2 Marksman, RG32M, CV9030 FIN and Land Rovers have all been seen in use by the Finnish forces. Russian helicopters have been moving between the two airfields for reasons unknown to NATO forces. US Airborne report mortar and howitzer strikes on their positions from the west, potentially from the airfield or Klamila.

Habits – Constant movements of aircraft between southwest and northeast airfields.

Intention – The Finnish Army appears to be preparing for attack from the US 10th Mountain Division striking from the north.

Morale – High.

Mission

CTRG 0 is to CLEAR TAOR EKKADON and TAOR MALOGHURST IVO the Airfield to establish critical vulnerabilities within enemy forces..

Execution

Phase 1 – CLEAR TAOR EKKADON using waterborne craft and AH-6 Light Attack Helicopter.

Phase 2 – Land on the mainland in TAOR MALOGHURST.

Phase 3 – CAPTURE Airfield IVO TAOR MALOGHURST.

Phase 4 – NEUTRALISE enemy assets capable of delaying 10th Mountain Division IVO TAOR MALOGHURST.

Phase 4 – TAOR ABADDON

Situation

TAOR ABADDON is one of the most heavily defended points in Virolahti and will be a tough fight in a head on engagement. CTRG 0 has been tasked to infiltrate the city of Virojoki to capture and hold the bridges the northern airfield. A large task force will be moving to fight its way through TAOR AXIMAND, link up with CTRG 0 and then push on to the Airfield to capture it in advance of the Serbian forces which are expected to arrive at any point in the next 7 days. If TAOR MALOGHURST is successfully captured we will have doubled are armoured assets to assist in the taking of Virojoki. If the Anti-Air net of the Russians is taken down this will allow fixed wing strike craft to engage the enemy and rotor wing to be used for reinsertion. The Russians will be expected to move further AA assets from Russia into Finland should we manage to cripple their AA net, as such any window made will be a small one, intelligence suggests it would last no more than a day.

Virojaki is heavily defended with a large amount of infantry stationed along the river and vehicles around the southern end of the city. Intelligence suggests that the Russians do not want to damage the city and instead hold it. If CTRG 0 holds the city until the rest of NATO forces arrive from the south it is believed that we will have a decisive victory in Virolahti and guaranteed our future victory in AO LUPERCAL.

Situation - Terrain

Observation – Urban and surrounding forested.

Cover – Expect heavily forested areas to provide only concealment around the city.

Obstacle – Natural impediments of Forest and Urban combat.

Key Terrain – Construction site and office buildings will provide good lines of sight. The hospital may have medical supplies and if the AA net is dealt with a place for reinserts to land.

Avenue of approach – Unknown.

Situation - Enemy (Russian Army)

Size – TAOR ABADDON is expected to house a Russian Motorised Rifle Battalion.

Activities – Expected to defend at all costs.

Locations – City of Virojoki, Airfield to the North and vehicles in the surrounding countryside.

Units – Russian Rifle squads and at least a company of Spetsnaz.

Tactics – Defensive tactics, not expected to employ large explosives within the city unless it is about to fall.

Equipment – AK Variant weaponry, standard equipment of Russian Armed Forces. APC’s IFV’s and Tanks have been seen in the area along with the presence of a variety of Russian rotary wing aircraft and ground attack fixed wing aircraft.

Habits – Unknown.

Intention – The Russian military needs to hold the city of Virojoki as the Primary MSR of the region runs through it and the airfield is in close proximity to it..

Morale – High.

Mission

CTRG 0 is to CAPTURE the bridges IVO Virojoki of TAOR ABADDON to allow US elements to push north and capture the airfield.

Execution

Phase 1 – Infiltrate TAOR ABADDON

Phase 2 – CAPTURE bridges IVO Virojoki

Phase 3 – Hold Virojoki until NATO Forces relieve CTRG 0.

Phase 5 – TAOR DURSO

Situation

CTRG 0, under the guise of the SAS Sabre F, has managed to against all odds land behind enemy lines, push to and hold the Central Bridge in the City of Virojoki allowing NATO armoured assets to win a significant victory in capturing the airfield and MSR in the North East of Virolahti. The 10th mountain will be taking the brunt of the fighting against the reinforcing Serbian and Russian forces while Airborne hold the city and push westward and the USMC try to hold the ground already taken. CTRG 0 has been given the relatively light duty of pushing north from their airfield in the south west to resecure the ports and towns in the North of TAOR MALOGHURST and then move into TAOR DURSO where a number of armoured vehicles of the 10th Mountain division and attached assets where disabled in their rapid push south. The platoon of US infantry that was left alongside the vehicle crews to hold the ground until the vehicles could be recovered report that they have been in light contact with Russians from the East and renegade Finnish troops from the south (thought to stem from the town of Kamila).

CTRG 0 will need to find these vehicles and bring them home along with any US soldiers that they can find in the field alive or dead. Most Russian forces are counterattacking in the east or fleeing northwards towards friendly lines, those that remain are doing so in an effort to cause as much damage to NATO forces as they can and are expected to sell their lives dearly.

Situation - Terrain

Observation – Dense forest, sparse towns and some farmland.

Cover – expect heavily forested areas to provide only concealment

Obstacle – Natural impediments of Forest..

Key Terrain – Klamilanlahti inlet holds the only area in which heavy equipment can be moved easily by water, it is currently under russian control.

Avenue of approach – Given the position of enemies and our FOB, CTRG 0 will be approaching from the south most likely.

Situation - Enemy (Finnish Army)

Size – Finnish Rifle Company spread IVO northern MALOGHURST, expected to be holding the town of Klamila.

Activities – Finnish forces are doggedly holding the MSR that moves through Klamila allowing Russian Forces to move deeper into Finland. Small bands of Finnish infantry harassing 10th mountain vehicle crews.

Locations – Almost entirely located at the town of Klamila

Units – Finnish rifle companies and Finnish Jaegers.

Tactics – Expected to hold position and then assault the US positions under the cover of indirect bombardment.

Intention – The Russian military needs to hold the city of Virojoki as the Primary MSR of the region runs through it and the airfield is in close proximity to it..

Morale – High.

US 10th Mountain report mortar and howitzer strikes on their positions from the west, potentially from the airfield or Kamila.

Habits – Holding the town and assisting russian vehicles moving east to west.

Intention – The Finnish Army appears to be preparing for attack from the US 10th Mountain Division vehicle crews striking from the South.

Morale – High.

Mission

CTRG 0 is to CLEAR TAOR MALOGHURST IVO the MSR to DENY enemy movements and to SUPPORT 10th Mountain with vehicle recovery.

Execution

Phase 1 – CLEAR TAOR MALOGHURST.

Phase 2 – SUPPORT and SCREEN stranded 10th Mountain forces IVO TAOR DURSO.

Phase 3 – CLEAR and SECURE Klamila IVO northern TAOR MALOGHURST.

Phase 6 – TAOR SEJANUS & KIBRE

Situation

The disastrous attempt to save the stranded 10th mountain in the north did not end in complete failure, the destruction of US military hardware has stopped the russians from recovering mostly intact vehicles. The Russians have secured their holdings in central and northern Virolahti, the US are hard pushed to hold back the Serbian and Russian forces pushing from the east. US forces in TAOR TORGADDON and TAOR SEDIRAE have been under mortar bombardment and sporadic fire from TAOR SEJANUS and TAOR KIBRE. 21 days ago information came to light that the Finnish Minister of Defence Antti Kaikkonen was in hiding in the central areas of Virolahti, before drone coverage was disabled by enemy aircraft we identified that Kaikkonen was in the town of Harju and that a platoon of Spetsnaz was searching houses in the area and that a large facility was under construction north of town.

With no available forces to spare CTRG 0 has been tasked with eliminating Russian forces on the coasts of TAOR SEJANUS followed by a rapid strike inland to destroy a roadblock set along the MSR and clearing any towns in SEJANUS. The strike on SEJANUS is to mask the movements of a reconnaissance team that will be tasked with HALO dropping into TAOR KIBRE, identifying what project the Russians are working on in KIBRE, locating Kaikkonen and extracting him. If Kaikkonen is not found before the Spetsnaz find him, then he is to be eliminated. It is imperative that the Minister does not fall into Russian hands, most of the Finnish government has been killed in the war so far and the Russians are intent on legitimising their control of Finland with the help of Kaikkonen.

The US advisors in the area have given information to CTRG command to show that without support any force that engages the Russians in central Virolahti will quickly be overwhelmed. To make sure that the reconnaissance team can complete its objective the strike force in SEJANUS holds the focus of any counterattack until they have finished the job. It is imperative that should enemy forces become too great that CTRG extract before they are completely annihilated.

Situation - Terrain

Observation – Dense forest, sparse towns and some farmland.

Cover – expect heavily forested areas to provide only concealment

Obstacle – Natural impediments of Forest.

Key Terrain – The MSR which runs through TAOR SEJANUS is one of the most important roads in Finland.

Avenue of approach – Reconnaissance will insert via HALO drop, the strike team will be using Landing Craft and Mk V SOCOM assault craft.

Situation - Enemy (Russian Army)

Size – Approximately a company sized Russian Force in TAOR SEJANUS, unknown forces in TAOR KIBRE.

Activities – Holding ground and processing civilians.

Locations – Harju, Ravijoki and Ala-Pihlaja.

Units – Russian Rifle squads and units of Spetsnaz.

Tactics – Defensive tactics.

Equipment – AK Variant weaponry, standard equipment of Russian Armed Forces. APC’s IFV’s and Tanks have been seen in the area along with the presence of a variety of Russian rotary wing aircraft and ground attack fixed wing aircraft.

Habits – Unknown.

Intention – To hold ground until relieved by Serbian and Russian forces from the east.

Morale – High.

Mission

CTRG 0 is to CLEAR TAOR SEJANUS IVO the MSR to DENY enemy movements and to SCREEN for teams extracting HVT.

Execution

Phase 1 – CLEAR TAOR SEJANUS IVO the shoreline and MSR.

Phase 2 – HOLD TAOR SEJANUS to SCREEN reconnaissance team.

Phase 3 – Extract HVT IVO TAOR KIBRE.
